When my son first started Montessori a few years ago, I learned about the work mat. Kids are taught to play on their work mats, then made responsible for tidying up and rolling up their mats.
This mat is for my little niece. Here is a new quilt that I've been working on for my niece in Florida. This was a great scrap-buster and there are some fabrics I've had for at least 5 years! I'm loving how the colors turned out. Piecing together the squares diagonally was a lot more complicated that I originally thought it would be. I had to draw a diagram to make sure I cut the sides correctly. Just need to quilt it and bind and it'll be off to Florida!
I thought it was time to make a new quilt for my 7-year old son. He's recently started really liking his baby quilt, so I thought he needed a more appropriately sized blanket.
I've been collecting space, math, and science themed fabric for the past few years. I even included a goat fabric because we've rented goats twice now to eat the blackberries in our wetland. I saw a quilt on instagram with dark stars on low-volume square backgrounds. I thought it would be cool to flip that and make whitish stars on a dark background. It took 9 months, but I have finished the quilt! I used double layers of batting and grey minky for the backing, which makes for an extremely heavy quilt. I need to do some hand tying because it was much too big to quilt on my sewing machine. Once it's tied, I will wash it and see how it goes. Bought the minky from JoAnn's, so I definitely need to wash it! After finishing my Bee-otch mittens, I used my newly purchased MadTosh fingering yarn to start on a sweater. I chose Andrea Mowry's Stonecrop pullover. The colorwork looked pretty easy. Plus, I wanted to give knitting in fingering weight yarn for a garment a try.
At first, I knit way too loosely and had to frog it after a few rows. The zig zag pattern was really blurry. So on my second try, I made my stitches tighter and I think it looks better. I think other people must be using thicker yarn because even with my tighter stitches, it still looks more "holey" than the others I have seen on instagram and ravelry. Currently, I'm about 70% there. I think I will do 4 to 5 more inches for the torso, then make this a cap sleeve. I'm so happy that my shoulder shaping worked out and is centered on my back this time, instead of on a shoulder like my last sweater. :P Finished! Made myself finish these off before I could start on my next project. The thumb is a little tight because of the stranding, but who cares!
I finally have my squares cut and trimmed! Here are all the different fabric scraps I had to make this quilt. I will probably make some better half-square triangles because I can't bring myself to make any more of these tiny squares. They are only 2" square, so will be 1.5" when pieced.
I ordered some yarn while Madeline Tosh was having an extra 25% off sale over Labor Day. On my to-do list is to finished a shawl and BEE-OTCH mittens before I start on this sweater. But I can't wait to cast on this bad boy!
